As a former possession of the British crown, Malta has one of the most varied and multicultural histories of all the destinations in Europe, and for this reason it proves a popular holiday spot year after year. Though now an independent nation, Malta retains strong ties with the United Kingdom but is closer in location to the Italian island of Sicily and the North African country of Tunisia. The country, made up of three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, has many interesting sights for visitors to take in whilst on vacation. The town of Rabat is famed for its catacombs, whilst Mdina, the old capital, is known for its remarkable fortifications and narrow streets. Cottonera, the city of three towns (Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea), is the location of Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitors Palace and Casino di Venezia, whilst Valletta, the official capital of Malta, is praised for its UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Malta is an easy island to get to but can be incredibly busy in the warm summer months. Ferry connections from Sicily are regular though do take a few hours, whilst plane connections to the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain are frequent. Malta's international airport, situated on the main island south of Valletta, is the major hub for Air Malta and is also a popular destination for Ryanair, Thomas Cook, British Airways and easyJet. Car hire for exploring the surrounding region is a good idea but should be reserved ahead of time if possible - the major brands such as Sixt, National, Thrifty, Avis and Budget may be booked-out in the peak season. |
